UNIONS

There should be no doubt of Pat Meagher’s commitment to a strong union movement in this country, they have obviously not heard him speak, read his writings, nor do they know about his personal history.

As Pat has said, when this country was formed, it was the stated intent to have a strong middle class.  Our founding fathers and patriots were rebelling against Kings and Queens who separated their citizenry into two classes, the rich and those who served the rich.  A vibrant and thriving middle class is what the United States democracy is all about.

Unions only came into existence when employers failed to treat their employees fairly.  When one company unionized, others would have to meet union standards in order to compete for employees.  In this manner, unions provide the prevailing wages and standard of working conditions that all workers, unionized or not, must then be provided.  This is why we say that unions protect the rights of the entire middle class.  Unions are essential to the effect running of this great democracy.

In order to keep this democracy alive, we must keep unions viable.  To do this we should pass the Employee Free Choice Act.  We should strengthen the Wagner Act, Davis-Bacon and not fear Weingarten Rights.  We need Fair trade, not Free trade.   Under the Bush administration and with compliance of Representatives like Jerry Lewis, we have seen the devastating effects of an almost unchecked capitalism.  Unions are the direct result of a failure of management.  They provide the check on our economic system that keeps our country growing.
