THE DEPARTMENT OF PEACE

War is a fact of life that we have accepted and learned to deal with.  It is the notion of peace that we have failed to fully understand nor deal with.

The Department of Defense and the Department of State deal with the cessation of violence.

The Department of Peace would work to sustain peace both internationally and domestically.

We have often been a violent society.  We must make an effort to not only control the violence, but to prevent violence from occurring.  We have no agency, no person responsible on a proactive basis to keep the peace.

This is a very different concept than what we have today.

In other words, The Department of Defense provides a strong military which is then backed up by the diplomatic efforts of the Department of State who work to secure a state of peace.  This state of peace is fragile and can be broken.  Both after a war and before a war starts, it is the Department of Peace that would work to create conditions that would prevent future violence from occurring.  The Department of Peace would involve a trained, unarmed force working to deter violence, protect human rights and foster peace efforts.  It can work, it does work, and it would provide the third leg to our country’s effort to maintain peace in this world.
